The Basics of Throwing by David Cohen, softback published by A&C Black, price 16.99. ISBN 978-0-7136-8129-1 available from www.acblack.com

For those intimidated by the potter’s wheel or cannot get the hang of the wheel, David Cohen takes a ‘back to basics’ approach covering the essential and fundamental principles of this art. The book is divided into nine chapters. It takes the aspiring potter from the properties of clay and preparing clay for use and the basic principles of the wheel to getting started and producing a variety of thrown pots.

The full colour illustrations help you to understand the basics with step by step instructions. Learn how to centre the clay, open the form, create a base and then lift the form. See how to subtly change the form into interesting shapes, how to make pouring lips, handles, lids and knobs. The final section is about expressing oneself through the versatile medium of clay.

This is one of the best books I have seen on this subject. It will set you well on your way to discovering expression through clay. It is an excellent book for the beginner. David Cohen is an excellent teacher.
