Finding Your Own Visual Language by Jane Dunnewold, Claire Benn & Leslie Morgan, softback, spiral-bound, published by Committed to Cloth & Art Cloth Studios. ISBN 978-0-9551649-2-7, price 18.50 from www.committedtocloth.com

Many people stumble at the initial block – how do I get what I want from my head on to paper, cloth etc. How do I create ‘me’? The answers are here threefold. Each artist takes a theme and approaches it in a different way – you can do the design exercises too and see what you come up with. They really work. I’m not what who is usually stuck for ideas, I often have too many floating around, but I found it thoroughly fascinating and instructive to follow these exercises and I know you will too. The examples of work in this 64 page book are brilliant – they will spur you on to reach your true potential and open the creative flow. As with all Committed to Cloth books – this is highly recommended – it’s the best book of its kind.

Paper and Metal Leaf Lamination by Claire Benn, Jane Dunnewold and Leslie Morgan, softback, spiral-bound published by Committed to Cloth & Art Cloth Studios. ISBN 978-0-944 (649)-3-4, price 19.50 from www.committedtocloth.com

What a gifted trio. You really are in for a treat if you buy this 54 page book, and I highly recommend that you do – it’s compulsory reading for any serious textile artist. Three people with different but homogenous methods of work. This is an inspiration in a world of top textile artists, these three stand out from the crowd by dint of design, application and imagination.

This book gives a thorough grounding in the basic and materials of laminating paper and metal to cloth. Once you have mastered the basic principles, the book moves on to the possibilities of working with cloth in this fascinating field. This book covers a multitude of areas including silk screen, metal leaf, stitching and burning, using paints and secondary lamination. There are numerous ideas to explore that will lead you along your own creative path. The wonderful examples of work given will make you want to explore each and every facet of this craft.

This is an excellently produced book by three artists at the top of their careers, who willingly share their knowledge and expertise and encourage the reader to reach within and fulfil their own potential. A must!
