Quilt Retreat – North Yorkshire Coast quilting tuition 7 days. Spend time on the North Yorkshire coast on a 7 day quilt retreat holiday with your personal tutor. Be inspired by the local scenery and the chance to quilt. We shall be staying in comfortable luxury accommodation close to Whitby. As your quilting tutor I have planned a week’s worth of activities. I have focussed on hand quilting for ease of use as there are no sewing machines available, though you could bring your own at your own risk (make sure you have insurance even though the accommodation is secure).
What you get:
6 nights accommodation in a double or twin room
18 quilting and inspiration tutorials
Discovery days – north of the venue and south of the venue
Different types of hand quilting
EPP: millefiori style EPP and OBW as EPP too
Patchwork style hand stitch: Japanese Folded Patchwork and Cathedral Windows
Wholecloth quilts, traditional stitch, stab stitch and big stitch
Research a theme
Interpreting the local landscape in quilts – lots of scope here
Easy landscapes, ‘village’ quilts and much more

Celtic and Anglo-Saxon symbolism
Local stained glass and architecture
Places to Visit:
These are not included in the price, so if you wish to do any of the following, please allow for public transport or petrol if you have brought a car.
This coast is rich in heritage: both historical and architectural providing abundant inspiration. I will show you how to tap into that inspiration and pull out what matters to you, then how to interpret it into quilting.
Enjoy coastal walks, quaint coastal villages, pubs, cafes, bistro, craft and gift shops, historic sites, research historical figures. Find inspiration, sail around the harbour, gardens, nature, seabirds (May and early June is puffin time), cliff walks, good public transport including a steam train, PLUS a host of quilt teaching.
We might not fit it all in, but I do have a planned itinerary but you are not obliged to do that if you do not wish to, if you would rather do your own thing.
What to bring:
You will receive a list of materials to bring with you when you book
Until I know how many are coming it is difficult to fix a price and the accommodation. I have therefore found 3 or 4 suitable places all with availability next May or June 2020. It entirely depends upon who responds and how quickly. I have found accommodation that allows for from 3-12 people. All with gardens, some with sea views (the one I prefer). The price for the accommodation please see update below. If you are in the area anyway and want to join us, please enquire and I can give you a price for tutorials only. If you need disabled access please ask because two properties I looked at do provide that.
What is not included:
Food, although I might include breakfast, I think that might be a good idea for a few pounds each – cereal, eggs, bread for toast etc, I will finalise that with people who want to do the retreat. There are restaurants and cafes nearby and a fully equipped kitchen at the accommodation. There is also a local store and you can get deliveries from Sainsburys etc. We are just 3 miles from Whitby.
Transport to the venue and back and transport to the outings. The bus is around 7 or 8 pounds for the day. I have planned one day northwards and one day southwards plus a day in Whitby (it is also walkable 2-3 miles if you prefer).
The evening is yours to carry on quilting, stroll on the beach, read or whatever.
Any venues you wish to visit such as Whitby Abbey, Museum, Captain cook Museum.
You will also need to bring your own sewing fabrics or buy locally (Whitby or Scarbrough).
As I said I cannot say for definite, it will depend whether you take the best room in the house, a double as single use, or share a twin room and how many of us there are. Do not be afraid to ask, there is no obligation. At present I am just gathering numbers, but would like to get this booked this month. There will be a 50 non-refundable deposit to secure your place. It is a bargain, during my research I saw a one night hotel stay with landscape quilt (sample was awful) and they were charging 540 pounds just for one night!
So far I have some ladies interested in 5th or 12th June for 6 nights at 510 pounds each. Extras noted as above. There is still one twin and one double room (can be for single use) available.
I look forward to you all joining me next year for this exciting and very unique quilting experience, book early by contacting me through the online form. No bookings taken until I confirm your place.
