Over the past twenty years the Tunisian Sahara has been a favourite place to visit. In my wall hanging I wanted to capture the textures, colours and my feelings about the desert. I gathered together different materials – silk cocoons, merino wool and silk tops. I put these on top of some soluble material. Stitched them in place by working a grid and then dissolved the backing. I then stitched my textile interpretation with hand dyed threads in silk and wool.
As an artist I use my intuition to interpret the places and things I love and translate them into textiles. I love texture and capturing the atmosphere and the emotions I felt at the time. This piece interprets the ridges and hills around Matmata in southern Tunisia, on the edge of the desert.
This unique depiction of the desert would brighten any room as a wall hanging.
The textile wall decor measures 19 x 21 cm (almost 8 x just over 8 inch). It can be mounted in a frame. This is the actual stitched area, with the right mount it would fit well in an A4 standard frame.
