Visions of The Sahara Three Original Textile Art

Textile Art – Visions of The Sahara Three

After visiting the Tunisian Sahara on more than one occasion, I wanted to capture the textures, colours and what I felt about the vast desert. I gathered together different materials – silk cocoons, merino wool, silk tops and pipe cleaners in gorgeous hues. I added stitch to my textile interpretation with hand dyed threads in silk and wool. This handmade textile is produced on a piece of orange felt.

About this work

This depiction of the desert would brighten any room as a wall hanging.

This textile art wall hanging includes various fibres in wool and silk with hand stitch. The colours and materials chosen reflect my personal experience of the Tunisian Sahara on an evening in the desert as the sun was going down. The setting sun turned the sand dunes pink.

The textile measures 21.5 x 27 cm (just over 8 x 11 inch). It can be mounted in a frame. The actual stitched area measures 18 x 22cm (just over 7 inch x 8″), with the right mount it would fit well in an A4 standard frame.

About me

As an artist I use my intuition to interpret the places and things I love and translate them into textiles. I love texture and capturing the atmosphere and the emotions I felt at the time. This piece interprets the ever-changing desert, the movement of sand dunes and the ridges and patterns one finds on the surface of the sand. I have been an artist practically all my life. I enjoy using colour and creating with fabrics, fibres and/or paint. I am a practising artist creating original art and textile art and also a qualified teacher.
