Many visits to the Tunisian Sahara led me to produce vibrant stitched textile landscapes to capture the textures, colours and what I felt about the vast desert. I gathered together different materials – pipe cleaners, chenille yarns, merino wool, silk tops. I added stitch to my textile interpretation with hand dyed threads in silk and wool. This handmade textile is produced on a piece of orange felt.
As an artist I use my intuition to interpret the places and things I love and translate them into textiles. I love texture and capturing the atmosphere and the emotions I felt at the time. This piece interprets the ‘layers’ of the desert, the flow of sand dunes and the effect of the sun on the dunes as they shimmer in the heat, change after rain or in the setting sun.
This depiction of the desert would brighten any room as a wall hanging.
The textile wall decor measures 21 x 27 cm (just over 8 x 11 inch). It can be mounted in a frame. The actual stitched area measures 18 x 20cm (just over 7 inch x 8″), with the right mount it would fit well in an A4 standard frame.
