Day 16 quilting of the 31 day blog challenge

Day 16 quilting means I have past the half way mark in the blog challenge. Lots of news and tips today.

Quilt Tip of The Day

I don’t know if it happens to you and I won’t blame my sewing machine, but take it from a lady whose sewing needle has gone in the opposite direction to what she thought when doing zigzag and turning corners, or even starting off, there is a way to know which way it will go. Like me, you probably have a machine, that depending on the selection the zigzag goes left or right. Yes, I have that. But sometimes, it still seems to have a mind of its own, and I know its me, I kept getting it wrong. So assuming there is someone else out there as crazy as me. Here is what to do if this keeps happening to you:

  1. Make sure you have selected the correct zigzag to go left or right as desired.
  2. Turning the corner, keep it true by stopping at the edge with your needle down (it does not really matter if you are on the outside or inside of the fabric
  3. Lift the foot
  4. Turn your fabric
  5. Put the foot down
  6. Lift the needle and you will see which way it is going to go
  7. Adjust, lifting the foot as necessary so that the needle will be insert on the outer edge of the fabric

No more ugly corners

New Inspiration ebook Seven Clocks

I am so pleased to have finished my 12th Inspiration ebook in time for Christmas. These are manual pdf downloads so they make great last minute gifts for someone you forgot. I can send it to any email you give and it can be delivered on Christmas morning or any time you desire.

This one is all about Clocks, and it goes in at number 7, making the total of 12 Inspiration ebooks. I have moved Churches (which was number 7 because that along with Tunisian Doors is an art Inspiration ebook of my work only, so slightly different to the others that contain original photos for inspiration as well as my work.

Day 14 quilting of 31 day blog challenge

Day 14 quilting is about seasonal quilts. Being awake in the middle of the night is not my favourite thing. However, if it makes me too tired to quilt in the day, it does bring lots of inspiration in the middle of the night.

Seasonal Quilts – Christmas

Do you make them? I guess the Xmas quilts are the most popular. I have not made any so far – because there is no room here to store things that are only used for a few days a year. I cannot deny though that I do have many Xmas design ideas, so who knows, maybe next year.

Other Seasons

I have designed for other seasons such as seasons of the year though, not once but twice so far, so that is high in the popularity stakes for me. I have also designed unique ‘winter-themed’ snowflake fabric as you can see. As designing goes, seasons and other themes are a hit because of the motifs associated with them. Do you love this kind of quilt? They are often random designs, row quilts or block designs.

Seasonal Colours

How about seasonal colours too? Colours are associated with seasons, silvers for winter, warm yellows for spring and Easter. I must say I prefer red and white, to red, green and white for Christmas.

Day 10 quilting of the 31 day blog challenge 2019

Day 10 quilting means I am a third of the way through the month of the blog challenge 2019. It’s been great to participate so far and I am enjoying reading the quilting blogs of the other quilters taking part. There are great quilts to see and lots to read. Today I have decided to introduce you to more of the bloggers. You can follow them all here

31 day bloggers

Let me introduce you to a few bloggers on Day 10 quilting. The challenge was initiated by Muppin and quilter Cheryl Sleboda who has a fun take on quilting. Cheryl loves texture and creates tactile textiles involving manipulation. She was instrumental in getting over 60 people to sign up to the 31 day blog challenge.

Pamela has some very beautiful quilts in her blogs. Her UFO on Day 6 is amazing. A BOM, Quilt Along is definitely something I must introduce next year. I have been experimenting on the quiet with blocks. Check out her day 4 on Fancy Feathers.

Tuning My Heart Quilts is a totally different style of quilting and that’s what I love about quilting, you can make it all so personal. Choose your style and technique, add a bit of you and it’s like magic. I love the Xmas makes on Day 4.

Creatin’ In The Sticks is something totally different again. Check out the Xmas star ornaments on her blog

Top Quilting Books

Best quilting books I would recommend would be in no particular order

Anything by Brian Haggard, I love these books and the style of quilting. His latest one is Blended Embroidery that I reviewed a little while ago.

Anything by Jean Wells, boy I love her style. Her design techniques are superb. I have also reviewed her books. Her latest is Intuitive Color and Design.

If you are into free motion you can do no better than Angela Walters. I particularly like Shape By Shape. She really is the Queen of free-motion quilting. I wish I could do this, I need lots of practice.

Sandra Meech is a fabulous quilter and I am lucky to have met her too. Her books are incredible. Her exhibition at the Festival of Quilts 2019 was wonderful to see.

If you want to be a quilt artist, look no further than Paula Nadelstern. She is impressive to say the least.

Day 8 quilting of the 31 day blog challenge

Inspiration

Day 8 quilting starts with Inspiration today. The question I am asked most is ‘Where do you get your inspiration?’ The answer I usually give is not the one people want to hear, for it is most often ‘Anything and everything from a manhole cover to another artist.’ This often as not is met with a blank stare.

However it is true. I do get my inspiration in that way. I not only quilt but I also do textiles, hand knitting and painting. I find the same is true for all of them, inspiration is ubiquitous. So here are my top tips on Day 8 quilting for you to find inspiration for your creativity

  1. Look with an artist’s eye
  2. Observe
  3. Never copy
  4. Try different mediums
  5. Try different ideas
  6. Keep a sketchbook

Inspiration ebooks

Day 8 quilting brings you lots of inspiration. Since it is the question I am asked so frequently and many find inspiration so hard, you can now access my photos for use in your work. The inspiration ebooks are packed with my photos and also my work to inspire you. They help you to concentrate on a theme, access good photos, see my work.

Quilting from Photos

My work is usually based on my photos and how I interpret them. If you looked at the ecourses earlier in the 31 day blog, you’ll have found the one on Quilts from Photos. Sometimes I print the manipulated photos direct to fabric, other times I interpret a photo in the traditional way of quilting.

Day 4 Quilting of 31 Day Blog Challenge

On Day 4 Quilting I hope you are enjoying all ‘behind the scenes’ quilt know-how and tips. Today I am bringing you more of what I love and more discounts. Great ideas for gifts today for the quilter who has everything.

Hand or Machine

On Day 4 Quilting are you hand or machine quilting today? I tend to do both. Even my machine made quilts are finished by hand with the binding stitched to the back by hand. It gives a good professional finish. Although hand stitching takes longer, I find I can relax with it in the evening, and it hardly seems like work.

Cathedral Windows Quilting

One of my favourite methods for hand stitching is Cathedral Windows. I love the rhythm of folding back and stitching in place. Apart from basic patchwork, this was how I got into quilting. Last year speaking at quilt shows, one lady was amused by how my samples were nearly all Cathedral Windows. I was speaking on my favourite design topic – colour but I had taken mostly samples of my Cathedral Window quilts.

Day 2 of 31 Day Blog Challenge

Hello Quilters, here I am with day 2 of 31 day blog challenge for all you quilters out there.

More About Me

I started quilting seriously just 3 years ago. I am a fully qualified teacher and I now teach quilting. I also teach hand knitting and textiles. I am a bit of a computer whizz and love digital design. I love all styles of quilting from traditional through to modern. This is my fantastic job – designing and making quilts. I love it.

Designing Quilts

When I finally started quilting, I decided I had to design. I had looked at almost every book on how to quilt and it just was not happening for me. I did not get quilting at all. So I basically started teaching myself. I just sat down one day with some of my stash of fabrics and decided this is the day I quilt. I was already a designer, so the design aspect never bothered me. It was all that cut 10 of this, stitch it together, cut it up again malarkey that had me confused. I still love the design aspect the best. It really is a thrill for me. I start all my quilts from scratch. I do not use quilting design software.

Discount Day 2

Since we have been talking about design, I would love you to take one of my exciting quilting or textile design ecourses. The Christmas Countdown is in full swing now.
