Inspirational Source Books For Textiles And Quilting

Inspirational Source Books are one of my ‘things’. I have always been a bookaholic. No wonder then why I became a writer of source books myself. You can check out all my current books on the website. They include unusual titles of use to textile artists such as Flaking Paint.

Gone are the days when I wrote exclusively about garden plants (although I have two garden books in the pipeline. Nowadays I tend to spend my time writing about textiles, creating ecourses or writing knitting patterns (something I have done for over thirty years). You can find my textiles and my ecourses on the website too.

FAVOURITE BOOKS

Still I have always had a good collection of books. I have been adding a few to that collection in the past few weeks whilst my shoulder has been healing. I look for books that are to do with pattern or history, with great photos. Not to use per se, but to give me ideas that I can explore.

I am grateful to have a set of the White Star publishing ancient history books. These are real treasures with some of the best photography I have seen in books. Unfortunately the publisher has been bought out and you might have to buy secondhand.

One of my very favourite books is about world textiles. It is truly wondrous.

Of late I have been adding books on Damascus Tiles, Mosques and Islam. All coffee table style but all with good photos and informative text.

INSPIRATION

I always find that if you cannot travel, buying a book is a good idea. You can be transformed to foreign lands and be inspired by wonders you have never seen. Or study familiar objects through new eyes. For instance I have been studying Islamic Architecture for over 45 years. I still manage to find new inspiration to inform my own work and to teach.

WHERE DOES IT LEAD?

It might not lead anywhere. You might have ideas that you do not pursue for one reason or another, but at least you are opening and broadening your mind. Sooner or later something clicks. I am embarking on a new phase of work thanks to my new inspirational source books.

Cutting, Piecing and Quilting This Week’s Diary

Cutting, Piecing and Quilting, repeat, repeat, repeat. It seems to be almost all I do but this week I did not quite keep up with the 5 projects that I finished last week.

I started off on target but lack of sleep and subsequent fatigue took their toll. I finished two and almost finished two others. So let’s take a look as I walk you through my quilting and work week.

Putting Together A Quilt

At the end of last week as I went live, I had a quilt on the design wall. It’s almost there, I am in the midst of quilting it, and it is looking good. I still have that feeling of wow it’s done and then remember I have to make a back and quilt it. So it was more cutting, piecing and quilting. I had hoped to finish but could not trust myself on the sewing machine for three days. (see image above).

Don’t worry I was still plenty busy. In between times, fabrics were chosen for the next two quilts. One is a scrap quilt and the other is a coat. Yes, I am finally getting round to making a quilted coat.

I did get one Cathedral Window Quilt finished with a border. This one has been around for a while waiting for me to figure out how to put the border on. It is going to hang in my hall way. I am so in love with that red bird fabric.

All my larger hand dyed pieces of fabric in silk, cotton, cotton scrim, linen and muslin were sorted and went into my Etsy shop. I’d appreciate if you would take a look. I have had 122 sales, 43 five star reviews and over 600 people love my shop. I am sending out fabrics now. Good for quilting, textiles, mixed media.

Knitting

I have been knitting a dream project in alpaca and silk and I am loving it. I feel very luxurious. It’s not a commit to memory pattern I have designed for this one, but it’s worth doing even if you have to keep your eye on it.

Embroidery

I finally picked up not one but three embroidery projects I have designed. I know, it’s like buses, they come in threes. Two were re-discovered in my drawer whilst looking for something else. The third is a brand new one. They are all exciting portraits and all slightly different. More of that next week. I put one of my embroideries into the #artistsupportpledge still looking for a buyer.

Inspiration ebook

Last of all today is Inspiration Travel Tunisia Part Three. Yes, I finished it today and like the others it has unique art inspired by my journeys included. I am thrilled to finish this three part guide book series.
